Review of a large industrial supply catalog reveals that 14 different internal drive styles for machine screws are available. One can understand the rational for a certain degree of head variation, such as the need for flush, decorative, compact or washer heads each have their own independent reasons for being. On the other hand the characteristics or fast and reliable insertion is universal. The wide choice of drive styles is reflected in the disagreements that are heard in any design or manufacturing community as to what drive style is best suited for their application. The purpose of this study is to shed some light on this debate by comparing the drive characteristics of several common drive styles in typical installation conditions.
