HAI Calls for More Housing to Unlock €1.76 Billion Annual Market Opportunity

Hardware Association Ireland (HAI) is urging continued action to increase housing supply, highlighting the potential economic benefits for Ireland's hardware and building materials sector. The association's campaign focuses on three areas: renovating empty homes, converting "above the shops" properties and enabling more rural family homes. HAI estimates that renovating 5,500 empty homes annually could generate €385 million in building-material sales. Converting 5,000 above-shop properties could add another €625 million, while an additional 5,000 rural family homes could generate €750 million annually once regulations are relaxed. Together, the three sectors could create 15,500 additional homes each year, potentially accommodating 50,000 people and generating an estimated €1.76 billion in additional annual business for the sector. HAI also estimates that 15,000 additional households could contribute €947 million annually to spending on goods and services. The association said it will continue lobbying for policy changes and monitor housing delivery across local authorities.
