Avoiding Liability and Risk by Using Compatible Fastener Systems

In previous articles, we discussed different fastener grades, nut grades, and flat washers, along with their various markings. It was mentioned that fastener components should be used in a matching combination, but there has been nothing written that explicitly states that they must be used in a suitable and recommended combination. I have heard from various parts of the country that users in many industries are mixing fastener components in a variety of applications. Most industries do not cross trade publications, therefore users are not exposed to the type of ‘a priori’ information that becomes second nature to those of us in the fastener business. The purpose of this article is to define to users the importance and liability of using fastener components that are not intended to be used together.
