Jau Yeou’s President Tea-Ren Sun Talks About Change of Taiwanese Fastener Industry
Add to my favorite
2014-11-10
Taiwanese fastener industry exported 1.459 million tons of fasteners (at the value of US$3.86 billion) in 2013. It is one of the most well-established industry clusters in Taiwan with a competitive edge worldwide. In H1 2014 the export volume reached 780.2102 thousand tons (up 10.2% from the corresponding period) and the export value reached US$2.7775 billion (up 11.73% from the corresponding period).

However, Taiwanese fastener industry still faces certain difficult situations. First, the hurried clampdown on illegal liquid waste discharge worried the manufacturers, as the supporting policies are insufficient yet, which has delayed the surface treatment, influenced the shipment schedules, and increased the costs of manufacturers. Second, the market of fasteners with little profit is usually determined by buyers and is prone to the influence of global economy and competition (i.e. When orders are less, the work is less for cost-down; when orders are more, the company must face customers eager to get the lowest price). General companies that are not able to change their product types or guided by the government have to improve the manufacturing process and adopt more exquisite management to make slender earnings.

Third, there are lots of competitors outdoors. When the FTA between Korea and the EU and the FTA between Korea and USA came into effect respectively in July 2011 and March 2012, the next one is the FTA between Korea and China. It is estimated that there will be huge impacts on the export of high-end automotive and electronics fasteners made in Taiwan. Moreover, fastener manufacturers relocated from Taiwan to China in order to reduce the production cost have contributed a lot to the growth of Chinese fastener industry for many years and such strength from China will also cause another wave of influence to Taiwanese fastener industry. As good talents are hard to be scouted and the improvement of R&D is how the fastener industry can continue sustainably. Unfortunately, talents of this kind usually work in science parks, so the recruitment of R&D specialists is not easy and the bottleneck for the inheritance of techniques has appeared.

Even so, the chance still exists for Taiwanese fastener industry. For example, under new cost and price strategies of several manufacturers, the supply chain will be gradually relocated to Asia in the end. One industrial forecast that in 20 years aircraft engines will create USD 700 billion worth of opportunities with a total delivery of 130 thousand units. The blueprint of changing the traditional fastener industry cluster to become one dedicated to aerospace components has been drawn.
