Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, UK has reported its decades-low domestic car sales. According to the data released by SMMT in the UK, the number of new car ownership registered in March 2020 was down 44.4% from the same month of 2019. Some experts also forecast that the global automotive industry may suffer a more than 100 billion USD loss due to the shutdowns of many factories located in Europe and America.

Last month, some European cities announced their lockdowns. Major car manufacturers like Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover also temporarily closed their manufacturing sites and asked thousands of their employees to take the unpaid leave. Many retailers also closed their brick-and-mortars and turned their focus on online stores instead.

Considering that these production lines and retailers may halt production for a few weeks, SMMT warns that UK automotive market in 2020 may shrink by one fourth with the estimated number of merely 1.73 million units of vehicles.

In terms of the sales of other European countries in March, Italy dropped 85%, France dropped by 72%, Spain dropped by 69%, and Germany dropped by 38%.

However, the sales of electric vehicles in the UK are still surging. In March 2020, more than 11,000 EVs were sold in the UK (a nearly 200% growth from the same month of 2019); the sales of hybrids were down 7%+, perhaps due to the fact that UK Government is planning to ban the gasoline and diesel cars on roads by 2035.
