U.S. Fastener Exports & Imports Increased in 2014

U.S. fastener exports declined in December, while imports increased. U.S. fastener exports of iron and steel fasteners (HTS Code: 7318) declined 7% to $292.3 million in December despite steady growth in China and Germany, Zepol reports. The top five consumers of U.S. fastener exports in December were Mexico (down 18.8% month-to-month to $92.5 million); Canada (down 7.5% to $78.7 million); China (up 8.3% to $13.1 million); the UK (down 8.8% to $12.4 million); and Germany (up 14.1% to $10.5 million, according data released released by Zepol and analyzed by GlobalFastenerNews.com. Imports of iron and steel fasteners (HTS Code: 7318) to the U.S. bounced back in December, rising 7% to $401.83 million during the final month of the year after dropping 13% the previous month, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau. The top five countries importing fasteners to the U.S. during December were Taiwan (up 13.4% month-to-month to $128.3 million); China (up 19.2% to $102.3 million); Japan (down 0.2% to $49.9 million); Germany (down 14.1% to $24.2 million); and Canada (down 10% to $23.1 million). The full-year figures for 2014 reflected a better outlook for U.S. fastener manufacturers. In 2014 U.S. fastener exports rose 6.7% to $3.84 billion, despite a three-month slide in the final quarter. Fastener imports grew 8.7% to $4.88 billion, gaining strength in the second half of the year. U.S. fastener exports and imports achieved solid growth in the opening half of 2014. Exports of iron and steel fasteners (HTS Code: 7318) from the U.S. increased 6.4% to $1.9 billion in the first six months of 2014, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau and analyzed by GlobalFastenerNews.com. That increase included a 5.5% gain by U.S. fastener exports in the first quarter of 2014. Imports of iron and steel fasteners (HTS Code: 7318) to the U.S. rose 6.9% in the first half of 2014, Zepol reports. Imports were up 7.25% in the first quarter of 2014. In 2013, U.S. fastener exports grew 9.1% to $3.6 billion, imports fell 2.2% to $4.49 billion.
