TENG'S INDUSTRIAL CO., LTD. Lashing Out at Government’s Obstructive Policies

2013-07-10

“Who is going to shed the light of hope upon us through the stormy clouds?” said General Manager Mr. Tino S. Teng, who feels irritation towards the current investment environment and pity for peers that strive for competitiveness. Teng, 65 years old, has been dedicated to the industry for 30 years with full passion and toughness, but he cannot help but feel speechless when it comes to the prospect and market competitiveness of Taiwan. Why?

Heading Toward a Different Path

TENG'S INDUSTRIAL specializes in making and selling gunpowder containers and gas cylinders. It has 10-year of trading experience with customers in Mexico, Brazil, and Panama through the introduction by US clients. Its products are listed as restricted products due to materials contained. The company is a rare one in the industry that usually doesn’t particularly stick to patented products. Its products are used in assisting fasteners to lock tightly and in position, and thus are categorized as power equipment for fasteners.

In addition, TENG'S INDUSTRIAL is capable of R&D to cooperate with multiple nations to develop special parts according to clients’ demands. Therefore, its products are patented. As Teng smiled with a tough personality, “TENG'S INDUSTRIAL does not walk the same path that others already did.”

Like Dogs Barking at Trains

Self-mocking himself as a dog barking at trains to no avail, Teng still closely watches the petitions that fight to break the barriers. It is already difficult enough to expand in foreign markets with all the surrounding strong competitors in the world, but now the industry has to face the national policy of “limiting domestic profits and benefiting foreign enterprises” unwillingly. “How can you not possibly feel dead-hearted?” expressed Teng.

To manufacturers, materials are definitely important. If they cannot obtain an advantageous price, they will be outrun and overtaken by components. Teng was well prepared with the comparative data of selling prices of Taiwan CSC on his hands during our interview with him.He showed us the determination that he would not tumble at the same spot, and expressed the message that “If you know both the enemies and yourself, you are possible to win every battle.”

Healthy Corporate System, Bravery, and Competitive Products

In analyzing the demand of Latin America, as we observe the industrial gunpowder container and gas cylinder procurement, it is obvious that the economic development changes the item procuring behaviors. Highly developed countries are usually willing to invest in high-value products. To tap into the Latin American market, Teng stresses on three essential factors: healthy corporate system, bravery, and competitive products. We are facing a brand new and unfamiliar market, an inefficient business pattern, and an incomplete market system with potential risks. Exhibition is a direct shortcut to entering the local market. In the early stage, TENG'S INDUSTRIAL participated in exhibitions for increasing sales; now, the company exhibits for gaining more public awareness and maintaining brand credibility. When it comes to various exhibitions, Teng suggests, “It is necessary to participate in exhibitions, but you have to deliberately evaluate your purpose before you choose the ones that you need.” To sum up, “the criterion of learning is not  judged by time but proficiency.” Experience is only as much as reference, whereas a clever and agile brain will help you outrun other competitors. Teng calls out to the government for opening up its gate, less restrictions, and a free market system to re-assemble industrial competitiveness.
