EU has begun to investigate if China transshipped its fasteners export via Malaysia to circumvent European antidumping duties against fasteners from China. If Malaysia is found to help China re-export fasteners to Europe, similar products from Malaysia is likely to face duties up to 85%, which would last until 2014. According to EU’s statistics, after EU imposed antidumping duties against fasteners from China, similar products exported from Malaysia to EU became triple to 32,700 tons from 13,700 tons in 2008. In the first 3 months of 2010, Malaysia supplied over 20,000 tons (representing 10% of European demand). In 2008, Malaysia represented less than 1% of market share in Europe. According to one internal document in EU, the fastener export from China to Europe plummeted by 80% and China’s export to Malaysia was 5 times than before.
