Twelve Fastener Myths
Add to my favorite
2011-02-23
The technology of assembly has gone “space age” along with everything else. Old methods of tightening with a wrench, an air tool or impact gun, and the technician’s 40 years of experience in determining what is “just right” are no longer in evidence. However, the threaded fastener is still taken for granted if it is even thought about at all. The designers who specify the fasteners in the assemblies are the under the spell of common myths; “everybody knows that” knowledge however wrong it may be; and have little or no awareness of the mathematics of fastening. Numerous articles and studies have shown that fasteners are among the top ten purchased items, about 75% of the work in an assembly plant is fastening, and fasteners (and fastening/assembly) account for almost 80% of the reasons for recalls. What are the properties that are required of a threaded fastener in an assembly and what common myths apply, or not, to them.
