by Tanya Shih, Fastener World Inc.

2015 TIFI Members Meeting was held at Cosmos Hotel Taipei on December 18, gathering over 250 members from around Taiwan. The invited guests were from the government, industry, and academia, including MOI vocational group section chief Lin, Kaohsiung Economic Development Bureau director Suan, TAITRA vice director-in-chief Chen and director Lu, vice general manager Wang of China Steel Corp., MIRDC director Lin, National Kangshan Agricultural & Industrial Vocational Senior High School principal Chen, Tunghai University E. Asia Department professor Chou, and TFTA supervisor Wang. The event with many guests in attendance was very successful.

Reviewing the association affairs and fastener trade events in 2015, including the participation in Fastener Fair Stuttgart, National Industrial Fastener & Mill Supply Expo, IndoFastener, Five Regions Fastener Association Conference, EFDA Member Convention, and Fasteners Meetaly, Chairman Anchor T. H. Chang thanked all member companies, representatives, directors and supervisors for their passion and support that have driven significant growth of the association.

Additionally, the biennial Taiwan International Fastener Show will be held at Kaohsiung Exhibition Center during April 11 and 13 in 2016. The attraction of this show is the convenience that you can take a factory tour right after your visit to the show, since the show is located in the heartland of Taiwanese fastener industry. “For the show of this year we expect to see 400 exhibiting companies in attendance taking up 1,000 booths, up 18% from the previous edition. In order to build our symbolic presence for the industry and attract more critical global buyers, there will be national pavilions for USA, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China. We will also invite global association chairmen and industry representatives to join and exchange views with us in this show,” said Chairman Chang.

Corresponding to issues regarding German “Manufacturing 4.0” and “Generation Succession,” TIFI invited MIRDC manager Dai to talk on “The Current Status and Blueprint of Manufacturing 4.0 Development in the Fastener Industry” and Tunghai University Southeast Asia Department professor Chou to talk on “The 2nd Generation Succession in the Fastener Industry”. Below I will generalize some key concepts of their speeches, followed by those key points of Chairman Chang’s speech on the fastener market trend.

Industry News─ “Fastener Manufacturing 4.0 Development Office” Has been Established on Dec. 26

During the conference, Chairman Chang pointed out that Taiwanese government has approved the “Manufacturing 4.0 Development Plan” and will appropriate a NTD 36 billion subsidy valid for 9 years from 2015 to 2024. The plan will focus on manufacturing and other relevant sectors for building Taiwan as critical place in the global production & supply chain. The government encourages companies to apply for the subsidy. TIFI has established a “Fastener Manufacturing 4.0 Development Committee” in correspondence to the related measures of Industrial Development Bureau for improving international competitiveness of Taiwanese fastener industry.

Manager Dai said, “It is a cross-industry manufacturing system that has its core on customer value and combines logistics, big data, intelligent manufacturing, and intelligent service. During this manufacturing process, beneficial numeric data can be obtained and productivity as well as production quality is greatly improved by using the data. To tell the truth, this requires a little imagination, but it does not mean Manufacturing 4.0 is an impossible thing to be realized because this trend does not come without the existence of the predecessor.” Since now we have had a Manufacturing 4.0 specialists to assisting companies in business upgrade and transformation, fastener companies are welcome to contact the office for in-plant consultancy to get a chance of receiving the subsidy of a maximum of NTD 10 million.

Industry Sustainability─ the 1st New Fastener Generation Social Scheduled for Feb. 29, 2016

How would you define “generation succession”? President Chou said, “Does it mean ownership succession, or ‘ownership + fortune’ succession, or ‘ownership + fortune + corporate culture’ succession? Which one is more appropriate? Your definition to succession will to some extent determine whether your business will be able to sustain for hundreds of years.” Chou thinks succession is no longer just a family business but scientifically a quantifiable subject. Through the guidance of specialists, many companies have successfully broken the curse of an old saying “Fortune never passes down through the 3rd generation”. In order to introduce the knowledge of industry specialists, TIFI is going to arrange the 1st New Fastener Generation Social scheduled for February 29th of 2016 and plans to irregularly invite specialists to share their professional knowledge on business succession.
