The usual focus on an externally threaded fastener typically views only nomenclature to identify it; for example, size and type, not the topography that includes the diameter, pitch, length, and drive system, and seldom what it does, how it will be installed, or used. Deeper engineering perspectives might examine the clearance aspects of the head diameter and height, clamp surface beneath the head, material, strength, etc. However, fasteners are commonly considered mundane so their utilization as a dynamic component in a design often suffers a shallow review. Here we’ll discuss threaded fastener points, and how those surfaces can be really important mechanical attributes contributing to both assembly and performance, not just an element of a static member of a joint.
